London, UK, December 20, 2010-As noted in my column last month, the program for the recent GVF Oil & Gas Communications conference in Kuala Lumpur included a session entitled Cloud Computing and Future Oil & Gas Industry Networking. This was the first time the topic of the Cloud had been introduced to any of the GVF-EMP vertical market-focused series of conferences, though not the first time that a Cloud-related topic had been included in one of the GVF’s horizontal-market events – specifically the MENASAT Summit held at the time of the Satellite MENA exhibition during the first quarter of 2010, where satellite Wide Area Network (WAN) optimization was investigated from the point of view of improving bandwidth-usage efficiencies.
Miami,Fla., December 11, 2010--IEEE GLOBECOM 2010 recently held its most successful meeting in the conference’s 53-year history with more than 2,500 scientists, researchers and academia attending nearly 2,000 presentations dedicated to the advancement of global communications designed to increase the quality of life worldwide. Held from 6 – 10 December 2010 in Miami, Florida, this annual flagship event of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) committed its entire agenda to “The Age of Mobile Interactivity” and the newest methods for lowering network costs, reducing carbon footprints, increasing efficiencies, expanding services and producing anytime/anywhere usage for users everywhere.
Johannesburg, South Africa, December 1, 2010--The opportunitiesfor satellite communications in Africa has never been greater. We saw a glimpse of this in June this year during the World Cup finals held in South Africa. The successful holding of the World Cup in South Africa demonstrated to the world that Africa is coming of age in the world’s stage.
London, November 15, 2010--As illustrated by the inclusion of such subject matter as ‘Cloud Computing and Future Oil & Gas Industry Networking’; and, ‘Commercial Applications in the Oil & Gas Sector Context: Helping Developers Get on the Satellite Wavelength’; to ‘Building-Out the Hybrid Opportunity: Evolving Regional Broadband Satellite-Wireless Integrated Solution Deployments’, and ‘Satellite in MENA: The Future is Ka...‘, the GVF “Event Horizon” over the next several months can be characterized as having both vertical market-related and horizontal market-related elements.
New York, NY, October 15, 2010-- The SATCON Conference and Expo, one of several exhibitions and conferences held concurrently under the umbrella Content and Communications World (CCW) event focused on business solutions for content creation, production and post production, media management, distribution and delivery, infrastructure management, and a wide range of communications solutions including satellite, fiber, hybrid networks, IPTV and other delivery formats.

Paris, September 15, 2010-Last year in Paris the mood was very upbeat with collective sighs of relief that compared to the rest of the world the satellite industry had escaped the recession comparatively unscathed. This year, while still very positive, the mood was more balanced with a recognition that at least for the manufacturers the peak order rates for commercial geostationary satellites (GEOs) of the last few years are not going to be repeated as the major operators have now largely completed their replacement cycles.
